WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN HAYS

Hays is the last large town before the Colorado line, and everything stored here sits outdoors for part of the year. We price cable that has been through that.

Ellis CountyWire and cable onlyKansas

Ellis County runs on three things that rarely share a page: oil, wheat and a university. Each one buys electrical cable in its own pattern. Oilfield service yards hold welding cable and control cable. Farms hold buried service wire and pivot cable. Fort Hays State holds building wire for whatever building is next in the capital plan.

We buy the unused portion of all three. Reels, part-reels, spools and sealed cartons, in copper and in aluminum, from #14 branch wire up to distribution cable. The seller photographs the tag and the printed jacket, and we price from that. A reel that has sat outdoors for three years is still worth pricing if the print can be read.

Three Economies, One Supply House

Hays is the service center for a wide, empty section of the state. Pumpers, roustabout crews, trucking firms and equipment yards are based here because this is where the parts and the people are. Their electrical work is practical: pump panels, motor controls, yard lighting, instrumentation on tanks and separators.

Around that sits agriculture. Grain operations rewire dryers, augers and shop buildings. Cattle operations wire working facilities and water. Both buy cable in lengths that do not match what a supply house sells, which is how a farm ends up with fifty feet of 2/0 on a shelf for a decade.

Fort Hays State adds the institutional layer. Campus buildings are renovated on a capital schedule, and a project that is funded in one fiscal year may be built in the next. The cable is often purchased early, because the price is known early.

Wind, Dust and Fifty-Degree Swings

This is hard country for anything left outside. Wind runs most of the year. Dust works into crevices and sits on jacket surfaces until rain cements it. A January morning and a January afternoon can be forty degrees apart, and the jacket flexes with every one of those cycles.

Overhead work takes the worst of it, which is why rural services get rebuilt more often here than the buildings they serve. What that leaves behind is fairly consistent:

  • USE-2 and URD left over from service rebuilds at rural meters and stock tanks.
  • Grounding wire and bare copper from poles replaced along county roads.
  • Welding cable and SOOW cord from service trucks, shop bays and portable welders.
  • Instrumentation and control cable from pump panels, tank batteries and separator controls.
  • Aluminum XHHW from grain dryer and auger installations that were re-specified.

I-70, US-183 and the Long Haul

Hays is the largest town between Salina and the Colorado line. I-70 runs east and west through it, US-183 runs north and south, and Salina is about 95 miles east. Denver is roughly 290 miles west. Nothing here is close to anything else, and that shapes how material moves.

For a seller, distance argues for consolidation. One reel does not justify a dedicated truck from Ellis County, but a yard clearing a rack usually has more than one. Send the whole list at once and the load becomes worth sending. Holding material for a second job to finish is often the cheaper decision, and it is worth saying so out loud rather than guessing.

Western Kansas loads also combine well with material from neighbouring counties, so it helps to mention if you are near Russell, WaKeeney or La Crosse. Western Kansas is a long drive to make twice.

What to Send for a Reel Sitting in the Yard

Most cable in this county is stored outside, and outside storage changes what a photograph needs to show. The table below is the short version of what we ask for, and why.

None of these conditions rules a reel out on its own. They set expectations before anyone drives out to look.

Yard-stored cable, condition and what to photograph

Ellis County material that will never be installed is still material. Photograph the tag, add the footage, and send the list in one message. What comes back is a figure, not a range. Wire and cable only, from the first reel to the last.

A long row of large grey and black cable reels resting on gravel beside a line of trees
Reels stored on gravel through a western Kansas winter are common here, and usually still saleable.

QUESTIONS FROM HAYS SELLERS

Do you buy from oilfield service companies based in Hays?

Yes, and that material is often the easiest to price because it is bought in standard lengths and labelled clearly. Welding cable, SOOW cord, control cable and instrumentation are all in scope. Pump panels, motors and switchgear are not.

How do you price cable that has been in the sun for years?

By what the jacket still is, not by how it looks. Sun-bleached outer layers usually mean the inner wraps are sound. We ask for a close photograph of the print and of the exposed end, and the price reflects both the footage and the condition.

Will you take a reel that was re-spooled onto another reel?

Yes, if the footage can be established. A re-spooled reel loses its tag and its counter, so it has to be measured or counted from the wrap. Photograph the coil from the side and tell us the barrel diameter, and we can work from there.

Is there a minimum quantity for a pickup in Ellis County?

There is no minimum in principle, but a single coil rarely justifies the trip on its own. Most sellers here combine a yard clean-out into one lot, and that is the practical answer rather than a rule we would hold you to.
