WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN JUNCTION CITY
Fort Riley builds, rebuilds and tears down on a schedule that never quite settles. The cable left over from that cycle is what we buy.
Geary County's construction market is not driven by population growth so much as by an army post, and posts run on their own calendar. Buildings go up, get modified, get replaced. Contractors mobilise for a project and demobilise when the money changes, and material bought for the second phase does not always have a second phase.
We buy the wire and cable that gets left behind: unused reels, part-reels, boxed spools and cancelled-project stock. Copper and aluminum, building wire through medium voltage. A few clear photographs are enough for us to price it and arrange the load, and nobody has to move a reel to get a number.
A Garrison Town With a Building Calendar
Fort Riley sits immediately north and east of town, and has since 1853. Civilian contractors do a large share of the work around it: housing, maintenance facilities, access roads, utility extensions, training-support structures. Each of those jobs has an electrical package and each package has spares.
The town side of the same economy is quieter but steady. Junction City is the retail and service base for the post, so hotels, restaurants, rental housing and the medical and school buildings that serve them all renovate in cycles. A hotel refresh or a clinic expansion leaves the same thing behind as a range building does — a partial reel with a legible tag. Steady work, ordered in advance, and never quite consumed.
Cable Stranded by a Teardown
The teardown side of the cycle is what makes this town unusual. Temporary structures come down. A unit's support buildings get reclassified and stripped. Contractors pull out and store what they did not install, because returning a part-reel costs more than keeping it. A demobilised crew usually keeps the material rather than freight it home, which is why so much of it sits in storage around here.
That cable goes into a connex, a trailer or the back of a shop, and then it follows nobody. Three years later it is still there, still on the reel, still unused. If you recognize that description, the material is worth pricing:
- SER and SEU cut for a service that was re-engineered before installation.
- MC and tray cable left from a building fit-out that was reduced in scope.
- URD and USE-2 from utility extensions that stopped short of the last two structures.
- Boxed spools of THHN in #12 and #10, still sealed, from a contractor's closing inventory.
I-70, US-77 and the River Bottoms
Junction City is where I-70 crosses US-77, about 60 miles west of Topeka and 25 miles east of Manhattan. That makes it a natural stop between two metros and an easy place for a truck to reach without a detour. Geary County sits inside our Kansas service area on ordinary working days, which is the practical version of the same fact.
The rivers are the other half of the geography. The Republican and the Smoky Hill meet at the north edge of town to form the Kansas River, and Milford Lake sits upstream holding flood water. Ground that floods is ground where buried cable gets replaced, and where service laterals toward the river bottoms are re-run more often than the buildings they serve.
Reading the Tag Before You Call
A reel tag carries five things that matter, and four of them are usually legible even after years outdoors. If you can read the tag, you can send a photograph instead of a description, and the quote gets faster and closer. Where the voltage line reads above 600, you are holding medium-voltage cable rather than building wire, and that changes the basis of the price.
This is what we look for, in the order it affects the number:
| Field | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Conductor size and strand | 4/0, 19-strand copper | Sets the metal content of the reel |
| Insulation and jacket | XHHW-2, XLPE | Determines what the cable can be used for |
| Voltage class | 600 V or 15 kV | Separates building wire from distribution cable |
| Length counter | 1,240 ft remaining | The single largest factor in a part-reel |
| Date or lot code | 2018 | Shows how long the jacket has been ageing |
If Geary County has left you holding reels you will not install, tell us what the tags say and where the material sits. The quote comes back on those photographs, and collection is scheduled once the figure is agreed. Wire and cable only, never the gear it connects to.

QUESTIONS FROM JUNCTION CITY SELLERS
Do you buy wire from contractors working at Fort Riley?
Yes, if the seller holds title to the material. We do not need access to a controlled site. The seller nominates a pickup point they control, whether that is a shop in town or a laydown area, and the load leaves from there.
A trailer has been sealed for three years. What should I photograph?
Open it, photograph each reel tag and the print at both cable ends, and note any standing water or rusted banding. Cable stored dry under cover usually holds up. Cable stored where water pooled is priced differently, and we would rather see it before quoting.
Will you take a mixed pallet of short cuts?
Often, yes. Short lengths are priced on footage rather than on the tag, and a mixed pallet is easier to move as one lot than as eleven separate conversations. Photograph the whole pallet first, then the labels on the individual coils.
How is a part-reel priced compared with a full one?
On what is left on it. A full reel can be read straight off the tag. A part-reel needs the remaining wrap measured or the counter photographed, and the price follows the footage. Age and jacket condition then adjust it either way.

TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE
Send the details and photos of the reels. A tag photo and a jacket photo answer most of our questions, so you do not have to measure anything twice.
- Wire and cable only: no transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators or machinery.
- Full reels, partial reels, spools, coils and boxed stock all welcome.
- Statewide Kansas pickup arranged after we agree on the load.
