WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN LEAVENWORTH

Institutional work and old brick buildings both leave cable behind in Leavenworth. Read the tag, send the photo, take the number.

Leavenworth CountyWire and cable onlyKansas

Leavenworth has two electrical economies. One is federal and institutional: the post north of town, the county's public buildings, the schools, the correctional facilities. The other is a nineteenth-century street grid where a rewire means threading new cable through masonry that was never designed to carry it.

Both leave surplus. We buy wire and cable from contractors, facilities and distributors in Leavenworth County, priced on the tag rather than on scrap weight. There is no depot in town and no counter to visit: the quote comes from your photographs, and the lift is arranged afterwards.

Federal work leaves a paper trail, and useful reels

Installations north of town run projects to specification, with submittals, approved equals and material that arrives tagged and counted. When a phase closes out, the balance is documented too, which makes those reels the simplest material in the county to price.

We ask for the same detail any buyer would: conductor material, gauge, insulation class, voltage rating, footage remaining. Nothing about a federal job changes the arithmetic, though it often means the packaging is still intact.

  • New surplus on original reels, tags and packaging intact.
  • Feeder and distribution cable from phased building work.
  • Grounding and bonding conductor from equipment and lightning work.
  • Tray, control and fire-alarm cable from system upgrades.

Brick walls, short pulls, leftover coils

Downtown rewires are physical work. Cable goes into existing conduit, around corners that were built before anyone thought about bend radius, and the pull is often limited by what a fish tape will follow. Contractors order in 250 foot coils because that is what the building allows.

Those coils come back half used. A downtown rewire might leave twenty part-spools of building wire in the basement, none of them full, all of them saleable by gauge and footage.

Upper floors are the reason. A second-storey apartment rewire can be fed from a single 250 foot coil, and the last forty feet of it will still be wound when the job closes. Multiply that across a block of buildings and the total is not small.

  • Part coils of #12 and #10 THHN from branch circuit work.
  • MC and armored cable from surface-run additions.
  • Old service cable removed during a panel upgrade.
  • Knob-and-tube era fittings are not bought. Cable only.

The Missouri River bottom, and what water does

The river sets the western edge of town, and low ground near it floods. When water reaches a conduit run or a meter bank, the material that was submerged is replaced rather than re-energized. That replacement is where the surplus comes from.

Cable that took water is a different proposition from cable that was removed before the water arrived. Submerged cable is usually not bought, because moisture travels under the jacket and the damage is not visible. Cable pulled and stored dry beforehand is priced normally.

Recovery work also produces temporary cable, run above ground to keep a building powered while its service is rebuilt. That material is heavy, flexible and often still on a reel when the permanent feed goes back in.

  • Service entrance cable replaced after a flood event.
  • URD and service entrance cable re-pulled at higher elevation.
  • Panel feeder cable from raised electrical rooms.
  • Temporary power cable from recovery work, if it stayed dry.

What each kind of building tends to leave

After enough jobs across this corner of northeast Kansas, the pattern is predictable. Knowing what your building type usually produces helps you decide what is worth photographing and what can go to the dumpster.

Anything with a readable tag is worth a photo. Bare lengths with no marking are worth a photo too, provided the gauge and conductor count can be shown.

Photograph the tag, the coil and the reel end. Note the address and whether a truck can reach the material. Send it over and we will price each class and arrange the lift. Cable only, no panels, no switchgear.

QUESTIONS FROM LEAVENWORTH SELLERS

Do you buy surplus from federal contract closeouts?

Yes, when the material is wire or cable and the tags are legible. We do not need the contract documents, only the reel tags and the footage. Packaging that is still sealed helps the offer rather than hurting it.

What about a handful of small coils from a downtown rewire?

Bundle them as one lot and photograph them together with the gauge visible on each. Twenty part-coils are worth pricing as a group, though each one individually would be too small to justify a collection.

Is cable that was underwater in a flood worth anything?

Usually not. Water travels under the jacket and the damage does not show until the cable is in service. Be straightforward about it when you send photos, and separate wet material from dry so the dry reels are not discounted with it.

How is collection handled from the Kansas side of the metro?

The reels are loaded at your site on an agreed day, with the equipment your yard or dock can provide. Leavenworth is close enough to the metro that a collection can be combined with other stops, which is why we ask for flexibility on timing.
