WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE ACROSS THE KANSAS CITY METRO

The metro's spare wire sits on distribution racks in Lenexa, plant pallets in Kansas City, Kansas and service vans in Olathe. We price it from the tag and collect it on the Kansas side.

The Kansas City metro moves wire through warehouses first and job sites second. A distribution center near Edgerton, a plant in the Fairfax district, a tenant fit-out in Overland Park: each one finishes with reels that are partly used and partly untouched. That remainder is what we buy, priced from the tag rather than weighed as scrap.

We work the Kansas side of the line, in Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami counties. Contractors, distributors and facility managers photograph the reel tags and the jacket print, and we quote from those pictures. Collection is arranged for one reel, a pallet or a whole rack, on a schedule that suits the loading dock.

Where the metro's surplus wire accumulates

Distribution is the first place to look in this metro. Warehouses along I-35 in Johnson County and around the I-435 loop hold stock for contractors working across several states, and when a bin is discontinued or a project is canceled, the reel behind it stays on the rack. Reels of MC and tray cable, half-used spools of THHN in a dozen colors and boxed counts in the smaller sizes are the usual shape of that surplus.

Plant maintenance is the second source. Factories in the Fairfax district and the rail-served blocks of Kansas City, Kansas pull feeders during shutdowns and stack the removed cable on a pallet until somebody decides what to do with it. Much of that cable is still serviceable, and a 500 MCM feeder taken out for a panel upgrade is worth more as reusable wire than as scrap copper.

Corporate campuses add a third stream. Office floors are re-cabled for tenant changes, server rooms are rebuilt, and the left-over boxes of plenum-rated cable end up in a storage cage rather than a dumpster. That is small volume per site, but it is clean, identifiable and easy to price.

Why the state line matters to a Kansas buyer

A business in Kansas City, Kansas or Overland Park is doing Kansas work under Kansas purchase orders, with material delivered to a Kansas address. The state line is a real line in a transaction: the pickup point, the paperwork and the price all sit on one side of it. Our offer is built around that. You are not explaining a Kansas job to a Missouri buyer, and no reel has to cross the line to be weighed.

In practice the wire stays where it is. We quote from the tag, the footage and the photographs, then arrange collection from your dock or yard. You do not load a trailer bound for another state, and you do not re-tag a reel to fit a different buyer's form. If your company is headquartered in Missouri but the surplus is stored in Kansas, that is a normal call for us, and the answer depends on where the reels actually sit.

  • Wire held in Johnson or Wyandotte County is quoted as Kansas stock.
  • A Missouri address on the invoice does not disqualify the load.
  • Collection is booked against the Kansas location, not the head office.

Kansas-side counties and the towns that call

Most of the metro work sits in three counties. The table below is a rough map of what turns up in each, and it is not a limit: a reel in Gardner is quoted the same way as a reel in Shawnee, because the process is the tag rather than the ZIP code.

Partial reels, discontinued colors and canceled jobs

A partial reel is not a problem for us. On a fit-out, the electrician orders to the print and finishes with 400 feet left on a 1,000-foot reel; the footage is written on the flange in marker and the tag is still wired to the reel. That is straightforward to price. So is a full reel that never left the warehouse because the job was value-engineered out of the package.

What helps most is knowing what you have. Read the tag, note the conductor material, the size and the remaining footage, and photograph the jacket print where the voltage rating and the temperature rating appear. If the tag is gone, the print on the cable itself usually settles it. Where the cable has been cut into several lengths, say so and give an approximate count instead of a single number.

  • Full reels, partial reels, spools, coils and boxed stock.
  • Copper and aluminum, from #14 building wire to 1000 MCM feeders.
  • MC, AC and tray cable, plus SER, SEU and URD from residential and commercial packages.
  • 15 kV and 25 kV cable from substation and distribution work.
  • Welding cable and SOOW from shop and yard use.

Dock height, forklifts and the drive between jobs

The metro is easy to collect from because almost every building has a dock. Tell us the dock height, whether a forklift is available and whether a trailer can turn in the lot. A full reel of 4/0 is heavy enough that a liftgate is not the answer, and a yard with a gravel apron needs a different approach from a sealed concrete dock in Lenexa.

Distances here are short by Kansas standards. Overland Park to Kansas City, Kansas is twenty-five minutes on a good day, Olathe to the intermodal terminal near Edgerton is shorter, and the I-435 loop connects most of the industrial addresses in the metro without a trip through downtown. Traffic around the I-35 and I-435 interchange decides the schedule, so an early appointment usually beats a late one.

If the reels are split between a shop and a jobsite, photograph both. We can quote the whole lot and collect in one run when the two addresses are close, which is usually the case inside this metro.

Send the tag photos, the footage and the address in Kansas to saleselectricalbuyers@gmail.com, or call +1 (614) 715-3047. The offer covers wire and cable only: no switchgear, no transformers, no breakers.

QUESTIONS FROM KANSAS CITY METRO

Our office is in Kansas City, Missouri but the reels are in Kansas. Can you still quote them?

Yes. What matters is where the wire is stored, not where the company is registered. Tell us the Kansas address and photograph the tags there. The quote and the collection are handled against that location.

Do you buy a single reel, or only full trailer loads?

A single reel is a normal inquiry. One reel of 2/0 or a lone spool of tray cable is worth a quote if the tag is readable and the footage is known. Full loads are quoted as well, but they are not the entry price.

What should be in a photo of a reel tag?

The whole tag, square on and in focus, then the jacket print where the size, voltage rating and temperature rating are stamped. Add one shot of the reel in the rack so we can see whether it is full or part used.

Will you take cable that has been stored outside?

Often, yes, depending on the jacket. Sun and standing water do damage over years, and a chalky, cracked surface on a reel that has sat in a yard is priced accordingly. Photograph the exposed end and the outer wrap so the condition is clear.

Can you collect from a shared warehouse with no forklift on site?

That happens often in multi-tenant buildings. Note the dock height, the door width and whether the reel can be rolled to the door. Loading arrangements are part of the quote rather than an afterthought.
