WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN SHAWNEE

Shawnee keeps adding warehouse space along K-7. Every shell needs a service feeder, and every feeder leaves a reel.

Johnson CountyWire and cable onlyKansas

Shawnee has spent two decades converting farmland on its west side into warehouse and light industrial space, and the work has not stopped. A new shell needs a service, a tenant fit-out needs branch circuits, and both orders carry more cable than the building consumes.

We buy the remainder: service feeder in copper and aluminum, URD from yard runs, tray cable from rack work, MC from the office portion, and grounding wire from the ground ring. Wire and cable only, priced from the tag. We take the wire, not the equipment or the scrap.

A shell building leaves three kinds of cable

Speculative industrial space is built before the tenant exists, so the service is sized for a guess. The feeder is pulled large, the yard conduit is run to a pad that may never hold a transformer, and the branch wiring waits for a fit-out that arrives a year later. Cabling bought for the guess is the cable that gets left behind.

The pattern repeats across the K-7 corridor and the Monticello Road industrial ground. It is not a problem with the contractor; it is what building ahead of demand costs, and the residue is a legitimate surplus lot rather than waste.

Schools fill the summer, and empty in September

The Shawnee Mission district and the parochial schools in the city all renovate in the same window. Between the last day of term and the first day back, electricians replace panels, add circuits for equipment, and re-lamp buildings that have waited years for the money.

That compression is good for the work and bad for housekeeping. Reels are dropped at a building, half used, and left when the crew moves to the next school on the list. By September there are four partial reels in four buildings and nobody has time to gather them.

  • THHN and THWN-2 in the standard phase colors, part reels.
  • MC cable left from corridor and classroom branch work.
  • Communication and fire-alarm cable on partial boxes.
  • Panel feeder in copper or aluminum from a service upgrade.
  • Bare copper grounding from a new ground ring or electrode.

Older neighborhoods, smaller reels

Not all of Shawnee is new. The eastern half of the city was built out in the decades after the war, and the service entrances from that era are reaching the end of their lives. An electrician replacing a 100 amp service with a 200 amp panel buys SER or SEU by the coil and finishes with part of it.

Those coils are small, numerous and easy to overlook, which is why they accumulate in vans and shop corners. Gathered into one lot they are worth pricing, and they are the most common single item we are asked about in Johnson County.

K-7, I-435 and a short run to the metro

Shawnee is easier to load than most of the metro. K-7 runs the western edge, I-435 crosses the south, and Shawnee Mission Parkway and Johnson Drive carry traffic east toward the state line. Industrial addresses mostly have a yard a trailer can turn in.

Because the city sits inside the metro, a Shawnee collection is usually combined with others on the same day rather than run as a single trip. Contractors who hold reels at several sites should say so at the start; one photograph per site and one schedule is less work than three separate arrangements. The Kansas City metro page covers how that works, and the SER, SEU, URD and USE-2 page explains the service cable that turns up most often here.

If Shawnee has a reel standing against a wall, photograph the tag and the print on the jacket. We will price it as cable rather than scrap, and collect it when the building is quiet.

QUESTIONS FROM SHAWNEE SELLERS

Do you buy feeder cable left from a new shell building?

Yes, and it is the largest single item we price in Shawnee. Aluminum feeder in 350 to 750 kcmil is common on speculative buildings. Length, conductor size and whether the reel has been stored indoors decide most of the value.

How much cable makes a lot worth collecting?

There is no fixed threshold, but a pallet is a sensible unit. Below that, a single heavy reel can still justify a visit if it is close to other work. Small coils are best gathered until there are several, rather than quoted one at a time.

Will you take cable that was left outside all winter?

Yes, after inspection. Freeze and thaw does not ruin cable by itself, but water tracking into a reel and sunlight cracking the outer jacket both do damage. The outer wraps are opened and checked, and anything unsound is excluded rather than priced.

Do you buy from distributors as well as contractors?

Yes. Distributors holding overstock, discontinued colors or cancelled-project stock are a normal source. Send the part numbers and reel lengths from the inventory list, and the quote can be built from the list before anyone walks the racks.

TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE

Send the details and photos of the reels. A tag photo and a jacket photo answer most of our questions, so you do not have to measure anything twice.

  • Wire and cable only: no transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators or machinery.
  • Full reels, partial reels, spools, coils and boxed stock all welcome.
  • Statewide Kansas pickup arranged after we agree on the load.
