WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN EMPORIA
Emporia is where I-35 meets US-50, and a fair amount of cable stops here on its way to somewhere else. We buy the reels that never got installed.
Lyon County's economy moves on pallets. Food production, manufacturing, distribution warehouses and Emporia State University all buy wire by the reel, and every one of them eventually holds reels nobody will use. A line change, a deferred project or a spare-stock policy leaves a few hundred feet of THHN sitting on a rack for years.
We buy that wire. Send photographs of every reel tag and the print on the jacket, tell us the gauge and the approximate length, and we price it as cable rather than as scrap. The load is collected from your dock on a schedule that suits your receiving hours, not ours.
Where the Surplus Comes From in Emporia
The industrial base sits in a few long blocks on the east and south sides of town, plus the warehouse clusters that grew up around the interstate. Plants here keep maintenance crews and spare conductors on hand. When a line is reconfigured, the leftover footage goes back on the rack, and the rack is not inventoried again. Nobody writes it off, because on the books the footage is still an asset.
Then there is institutional work. A university building gets renovated, a clinic adds a wing, a school re-feeds a gym. Each project closes out with partial reels, and the electrician who ran it usually knows exactly which ones will never be touched again. That knowledge is worth more than any list we could keep.
What We Price Out of Lyon County
The offer is wire and cable only. Transformers, switchgear, breakers, motor control centers, generators and general scrap metal are outside it, and we say so before anyone loads a truck. Wire is a different trade with a different price basis, and a buyer and a scrap yard will quote the same reel very differently.
Within that boundary the range is wide. Copper and aluminum building wire, tray cable, distribution cable and instrumentation all move through Emporia, and THHN, THWN and XHHW make up most of what a plant keeps as spares. The photograph column below is the part that decides the number.
| Cable | Where it turns up here | Send this |
|---|---|---|
| THHN and THWN-2, #14 to 4/0 | Plant branch circuits and panel changes | Tag showing gauge and length counter |
| XHHW-2 aluminum, #6 to 500 MCM | Feeders in distribution buildings | Jacket print and conductor color |
| SER and SEU | Warehouse and shop sub-panels | Full reel face plus the tag |
| Tray cable and MC | Production lines and conveyor runs | Reel count and remaining footage |
| 15 kV concentric neutral | Underground runs to pad-mounted equipment | Voltage class printed on the jacket |
Getting It Off Your Dock
Emporia is a highway town. I-35 runs along the east side and meets US-50 at exit 127. The Kansas Turnpike's I-335 segment also begins here and runs northeast, which puts about 60 miles between your dock and Topeka and roughly 100 to the Kansas City metro.
That geography matters for one reason. A full reel is heavy and awkward, and a load only makes sense when it is worth a truck. Tell us what you have and where it sits. We will tell you whether it is a pallet, a van or a flatbed, and we work around the hours your door is actually open. If the quantity is smaller than a truckload, say so plainly; part loads leave from this part of central Kansas often enough that waiting is rarely the right answer.
Ice, Wind and Rural Overhead
West of town the Flint Hills begin, and the lines crossing them take weather that urban cable never sees. Ice builds on conductors and on the service drops to farm shops. Wind works the spans all year. Frost heave lifts whatever was buried too shallow by the time March arrives. Summer heat is the other half of the same problem.
That cycle produces a specific kind of surplus. Crews who work outages accumulate leftovers faster than anyone gets around to counting them. What tends to be left over:
- URD and USE-2 pulled short when a service lateral was re-routed rather than replaced.
- Medium-voltage cable from a rebuild toward Olpe, Hartford or Neosho Rapids.
- Bare copper and green grounding wire from pole replacements and meter upgrades.
- Control and instrumentation cable from a plant panel that was specified twice.
If a rack in Emporia is holding footage you will never install, photograph the tags and send the gauge and length with them. We will price the cable and arrange the load. Read the tag. Send the photo. Get a number.

QUESTIONS FROM EMPORIA SELLERS
Do you buy from Emporia warehouses as well as job sites?
Both. A distributor holding overstock and a contractor holding a cancelled project have the same asset: unused cable on a tagged reel. We price from the tag and the jacket print, not from where the reel has been sitting.
The reel tag is gone. Is it still worth sending?
Usually. Photograph the jacket print near both ends and measure the remaining circumference of the wrap. Most cable is legible that way. If the print is worn off entirely we will tell you what can and cannot be confirmed before a pickup is agreed.
Will you take short cuts and single coils?
Yes, down to one coil. Small quantities are generally worth combining with other material before a truck is sent, so it helps to tell us everything you are holding at once rather than one reel at a time.
Are pallets, racks and wooden reels included?
No. The offer covers wire and cable. Pallets, steel racks, wooden reels and the switchgear a plant may be clearing at the same time are separate trades and not part of a wire quote.

TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE
Send the details and photos of the reels. A tag photo and a jacket photo answer most of our questions, so you do not have to measure anything twice.
- Wire and cable only: no transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators or machinery.
- Full reels, partial reels, spools, coils and boxed stock all welcome.
- Statewide Kansas pickup arranged after we agree on the load.
