WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN GARDEN CITY

Out here the cable is mostly outdoors, and it is mostly aluminum. We price pivot runs, plant feeders and shop spools in Finney County.

Finney CountyWire and cable onlyKansas

Garden City runs on two things that both need cable: water lifted out of the Ogallala, and cattle processed at scale. The first means buried runs across fields to wells and pivots. The second means plants with motor circuits, refrigeration and washdown. Between them, there is more wire in Finney County than the population would suggest.

We buy surplus electrical wire and cable here, copper and aluminum, from #14 singles up to 500 MCM and beyond. We are not a scrap yard and we do not buy equipment. The reels are priced on what the tag says and how much is left on them.

Pivot work, well runs and the cable under the field

A center pivot is a moving electrical machine in a dusty field, and the buried run that feeds it takes a beating. Cable is direct-buried, spliced at the pivot, and replaced when a fault shows up in the wrong season. Nothing about that work is tidy.

When a pivot is rebuilt or a well is re-drilled, the old run comes out in lengths. Some of it is scrap. Some of it is a 400 foot piece of URD that was cut from a longer reel and never used, still coiled on the truck.

Irrigation is also seasonal in a way that shapes the work. Everything happens between harvest and first freeze, or during a July breakdown when the pivot has to run that night.

  • URD and USE-2 in aluminum and copper, 2/0 through 500 MCM.
  • Direct-burial feeder cut from a longer reel and never installed.
  • Grounding conductor pulled alongside a pivot run.
  • Portable cord and SOOW from service trucks and repair trailers.

Beef plants and the cable that survives a washdown

Processing work is wet, cold and constant. Motor circuits run to pumps, conveyors and refrigeration, and the cable has to tolerate cleaning chemicals as well as temperature. Replacement happens on a schedule driven by inspection, not by failure.

That produces steady surplus: feeder cable pulled during a machine swap, tray cable from control work, and flexible drops cut to fit an installation that has since changed.

Plants here also keep spare cable against a stoppage, and the spare goes stale when a line is rebuilt. A reel bought for a machine that has been replaced is the most common thing a maintenance supervisor wants gone.

  • Feeder and sub-feeder cable from refrigeration and compressor rooms.
  • Tray cable and control cable from panel and conveyor work.
  • SOOW whips and portable cord from equipment connections.
  • Aluminum feeder conductor from service and distribution upgrades.

Sun, dust and the way a jacket ages out here

Ultraviolet light and blowing sand do more damage to a reel stored outside than any electrical fault. A jacket left in the sun for two summers will chalk and crack. Sand works into the layers and abrades the insulation beneath.

That does not automatically make the cable worthless, but it does mean the jacket surface needs to be in the photograph. A reel kept under a shed prices very differently from one that has been on a trailer since March.

  • Store reels under cover where you can; it preserves the price.
  • Photograph the outermost wrap, not just the tag.
  • Separate sun-damaged material from shed-stored material before pricing.
  • Note any splice or cut end, since both affect the usable length.
  • Dust on the jacket is not a defect. Cracking is.

The sizes and formats that actually turn up

Most lots across this part of western Kansas are a mixture, and the mixture is predictable. Irrigation work brings aluminum in the larger sizes, plant work brings copper and tray cable, and the shop shelf brings everything else in small quantities.

A single photograph of the whole lot, followed by one photograph per reel with the tag readable, is the fastest way through it.

QUESTIONS FROM GARDEN CITY SELLERS

Do you buy aluminum URD left from pivot and well work?

Yes, and it is the most common thing we are offered in this county. Photograph the jacket print, which carries the size and the URD marking, and measure the coil. Aluminum is priced on its own basis, not against copper.

Does cable that sat in a field for years still sell?

Sometimes. The deciding factor is the jacket: chalked and cracked is a discount, split and wet is usually a refusal. Show the outer wrap in daylight and be honest about how long it has been outside.

Will you take a single coil with no tag?

Yes, if the gauge and conductor count can be established. Strip an inch of jacket in the photograph, show the strands, and measure the conductor diameter. An untagged coil is priced lower, but it is not automatically refused.

Can you collect outside Garden City?

Collection covers Holcomb, Lakin, Deerfield, Sublette, Satanta and Ulysses. Distances here are long, so tell us what else is on the route. Combining stops is how a pickup in the western counties stays practical.
