WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN WICHITA
Wichita's aircraft shops and the suppliers that feed them hold more unused wire than they count. We price it off the reel tag and collect.
Wichita builds airplanes, and everything that supports airplane building runs on wire. A shop that rewires a bay, adds a test cell or swaps a distribution panel ends the job holding partial reels it cannot send back. We buy those reels, along with the full ones nobody opened.
The offer is wire and cable only, and it is priced from the tag rather than from scrap weight. Send photographs of the reel flange and the print on the jacket, and the figure that comes back is tied to gauge, insulation, voltage class and the length still on the reel.
Where Wichita wire comes from
Aircraft manufacturing is the first source, and the supplier base around it is the second. Machine shops, sheet-metal houses, plating lines and composites cutters buy building wire, tray cable and control cable in bulk for a build, then hold the balance when the build changes shape. Plants on the south and east sides of the city do the same at a larger scale, and a plant shutdown for maintenance releases a season of reels at once.
Oilfield service yards add a different mix. Cable that has been out to well sites comes back dirty and short, and service companies keep reels from skid wiring, pump panels and instrumentation runs they will not repeat. Hospitals and the university campus contribute too, generally when a renovation closes out and the electrical contractor clears its job box.
Full reels, partial reels, cancelled orders
A cancelled project is the cleanest sale. The reels are still banded, the tags are legible, and pricing comes down to matching a specification to present demand. Partial reels are more common and are worth just as much per foot once the remaining length is established rather than guessed.
We take boxed inventory, coils, spools pulled off a rack and reels that have stood outdoors through two Kansas winters. Copper and aluminum both. Nothing needs cutting, cleaning or re-tagging before collection, and one pallet in a corner of a shop is enough to be worth a look.
- THHN and THWN-2 building wire, #14 through 500 kcmil, full or part used.
- XHHW and XHHW-2 feeder, #6 through 750 kcmil, often left from a service change.
- MC, AC and tray cable, including VFD cable pulled short during a drive replacement.
- SER, SEU and URD from service and yard runs.
- 15 kV and 25 kV shielded cable left at the end of a substation job.
What four lines on the jacket settle
Most pricing questions are answered by four lines of print on the jacket: conductor material, gauge, insulation type and voltage rating. Photograph the flange, the tag and the print where the jacket passes the reel edge, and the specification is settled without anybody driving out to look.
Shielded cable is a separate conversation. A reel of 15 kV is priced on conductor size, insulation condition and the length remaining, and the medium and high voltage cable page sets out exactly what to photograph for it.
Length is the one field that is often wrong. A tag that says 1,000 feet may describe the reel when new, not what is on it now. If the tail is visible, photograph the cut end next to a tape measure and the estimate stops being a range.
| Cable | Sizes in circulation | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| THHN / THWN-2 | #14 to 500 kcmil | Branch circuits in shop and office fit-outs |
| XHHW-2 | #6 to 750 kcmil | Service and feeder upgrades |
| Tray cable, TC and PLTC | #16 to 4/0 | Plant cable tray, instrumentation loops |
| SER / SEU | #6 to 4/0 | Service replacements and additions |
| 15 kV shielded | #2 to 750 kcmil | Substation and primary distribution work |
Collection across Sedgwick County
Wichita sits on I-35, I-135, I-235 and K-96, so a load from Derby, Andover, Haysville, Maize, Goddard or Park City is a short run in any direction. Collection is arranged around your crew and your gate hours rather than around a fixed route through the state.
Storm seasons drive the local rebuild cycle. Hail and tornado damage means service masts, panels and yard lines are replaced in a hurry, and the leftover reels usually sit in a yard for a year before anyone counts them. That is the right moment to take photographs. Sellers elsewhere in south-central Kansas can begin with the quote form and the same two photographs.
If a reel is in your way in Wichita, photograph the tag and the flange and send both. We price what the tag says, not what a yard scale says, and arrange collection once you accept the number.

QUESTIONS FROM WICHITA SELLERS
Do you buy a single pallet of wire from a Wichita shop?
Yes. Volume is not the test; legibility is. One pallet holding four part-used reels with readable tags is worth pricing, and so is a single 500 kcmil reel with 600 feet left. Smaller lots are usually handled as one collection rather than several.
What happens if the reel tag has weathered away?
Read the print on the jacket instead. It gives insulation type, gauge and sometimes the voltage rating. Measure the conductor with a gauge if the size is uncertain, photograph the cut end, and the reel can still be priced without the original tag.
Is aluminum wire from a plant worth selling?
It is, and it is priced separately from copper because the metal and the recovery differ. Large aluminum feeder and URD reels from plant expansions are common in Sedgwick County. Send the same photographs and note the alloy if the tag states it.
Will you take the switchgear and panels as well?
No. The offer covers wire and cable only, which means reels, spools, coils and boxed lengths. Transformers, switchgear, breakers, motor control centers, generators and general scrap metal sit outside it and should go to a different buyer.

TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE
Send the details and photos of the reels. A tag photo and a jacket photo answer most of our questions, so you do not have to measure anything twice.
- Wire and cable only: no transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators or machinery.
- Full reels, partial reels, spools, coils and boxed stock all welcome.
- Statewide Kansas pickup arranged after we agree on the load.
