WE BUY SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN PITTSBURG
Crawford County has been dug up, rebuilt and rewired for a century. Some of that cable is still sitting on a reel, and we buy it.
Pittsburg runs on a mix that few Kansas towns share: a university, a machine and fabrication base, and a downtown built when the coal camps were busy. All three keep cable on hand. Maintenance shops hold spares, contractors hold leftovers, and renovation work stops and restarts with the budget.
We buy unused electrical wire and cable in Crawford County, price it from the reel tag and the jacket print, and arrange collection. Copper and aluminum, low voltage through 15 kV, full reels and short coils. The seller sends photographs; we send a number. The whole transaction runs on those photographs and one phone call.
The Ground Here Has Been Worked Before
Parts of this county sit over old underground coal workings, and the lead and zinc ground to the south was worked in much the same way. When voids settle, the surface moves a little, and anything buried in it moves with the surface. Conduit that was straight in 1998 is not straight now.
The practical result is that underground runs get replaced before they fail rather than after. A service lateral that has shifted, a duct bank that has cracked, a feeder pulled out of a run that was re-cut. What comes back to the shop is often a partial reel of exactly the cable that was just installed.
Expansive clay does the rest. It swells in a wet spring and shrinks in August, and it works on every direct-buried cable in the county. That is worth knowing when you are deciding what to keep and what to sell.
A Campus, a Downtown and a Renovation Calendar
Pittsburg State University is the largest single user of electrical work in town, and campus buildings are renovated in phases rather than all at once. A phase gets funded, cable is ordered, and the phase slips by a year or two. The cable is already on site by then, tagged and stored.
The same pattern holds downtown. Commercial blocks from the early twentieth century are being brought back one building at a time, and each one needs new feeders, new panels and new branch circuits. When a tenant walks away mid-project, the material stays with whoever paid for it.
That is the material worth photographing: unused, still wrapped, still tagged. We do not buy what was pulled out of a wall. Manufacturing and industrial buyers often assume otherwise, so it is worth stating plainly.
- A renovation funded in stages, with cable already bought for the next phase.
- A tenant fit-out that changed hands before the electrical rough-in.
- A shop or lab upgrade where the equipment specification changed after the order.
- A project paused for a fiscal year, with material delivered and stored indoors.
US-69 and the Run South
Pittsburg sits on US-69, with US-400 skirting the west side and US-160 splitting off at Frontenac. The four-lane run south toward Columbus and on into Oklahoma is the reason a load can leave here without much planning. Joplin is about an hour east; Kansas City is roughly 120 miles north.
For a seller, the useful part is that a truck does not have to be special-ordered out of a metro. Tell us the reel count, the approximate weight class and whether a forklift is available at your door. Those three answers decide the vehicle.
What Southeast Kansas Jobs Leave Behind
The wire that accumulates here is mostly industrial rather than residential. Shops that build and repair machinery use a narrower range of cable than a house builder, but they buy it in longer lengths and they keep more of it.
What we see most often from Crawford County:
- Tray cable and MC from machine installations, conveyor lines and panel feeders.
- Welding cable and SOOW cord from fabrication bays, cut to length and left in coils.
- Copper THHN and THWN-2 in #12 through 4/0, usually several part-reels of each.
- Control and instrumentation cable from projects where the controls package changed.
- 15 kV cable and concentric neutral from yard distribution and pad-mounted work.
A Crawford County shop, campus building or job site holding unused cable is worth one message. Photograph the tags and the reel faces, give the gauge, and a number comes back on those images. Nothing else in the building is in scope, and we say so before a truck is booked.

QUESTIONS FROM PITTSBURG SELLERS
Do you buy cable that was pulled out of a building?
No. The offer is for unused cable: new surplus, overstock, cancelled-project stock and partial reels that were never installed. Cable removed from service is a different trade, and we would rather say that now than renegotiate at the tailgate.
Does cable stored outdoors in southeast Kansas still have value?
Often, yes. Sun and moisture age a jacket, and water can wick into an open end. Photograph both ends and the tag, and we will price what the cable actually is. A reel that sat under a tarp for two years is usually fine; one that sat in standing water is a conversation.
Is aluminum tray cable worth sending in?
Yes, and it is priced on its own basis rather than against copper. Send the conductor size and the jacket print. Aluminum is common in exactly the plant work Pittsburg does, so it is rarely a wasted photograph.
Can a contractor from out of state sell wire held on a Pittsburg job?
Yes, whoever owns the material can sell it. Say who holds title and where the reels are stored. We deal with the seller, not with the job, and the pickup is arranged with whoever controls the site.
