WE BUY SURPLUS CABLE FROM DATA CENTERS, UTILITIES AND POWER PLANTS
Capacity is ordered years before it is used. When a hall is re-laid or a feeder is deferred, the cable left on the reel is spec-grade material with a tag on it.
Data center and utility work is planned years ahead and built in phases. Capacity is ordered for a hall that fills later, feeds are duplicated for redundancy, and a design change moves a row of cabinets after the cable is already on site. What is left over is not junk. It is specification-grade cable with a tag.
We buy wire and cable from data centers, utilities, substations and power plants in Kansas. That includes 5 kV through 35 kV cable on full or partial reels, tray and control cable, and bare copper, all priced on the tag. Pickup is arranged from the yard or from the loading dock.
Data centers: phased builds leave cable behind
A hall is wired for the load it will eventually carry, not the load it carries at turn-up. When a tenant fit-out changes, or a row is re-laid after the cooling design moves, cable already pulled or staged does not always follow the new plan. Redundant A and B feeds double the order, and a change to one side strands the other.
Tray work adds surplus of its own: tray cable cut long, control cable for monitoring, boxed branch wire from a package that was re-scoped. None of it failed. It stopped matching the drawing.
- Phased capacity bought ahead of the fit-out
- Redundant A and B feeds cut short by a layout change
- Tray cable and control cable from a re-routed tray
- Branch wire left from a re-scoped package
- Decommissioned runs from a hall being reconfigured
Utilities: rebuilds, reconductoring and storm stock
Utility surplus comes from the work itself. Reconductoring and substation rebuilds change the cable schedule mid-project, and reels bought against the original schedule stay in the yard. Storm restoration stages material at locations that are never fully drawn down. In western Kansas, wind collection systems run 35 kV cable over long distances, and a change in turbine layout strands the tail of an order.
Distribution stock is the other source: URD and USE-2 for underground residential work, 15 kV and 25 kV cable with concentric neutral, and bare copper for grounding. When a yard is reorganized or a project is deferred, those reels become a line item nobody is watching.
Voltage class is the first question on every utility reel, because it decides the price before footage does.
| Cable class | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| 600 V THHN, XHHW-2 | Station service, panels, control power |
| 5 kV and 8 kV | Plant distribution, older substation feeders |
| 15 kV | Distribution feeders, substation ties |
| 25 kV and 35 kV | Subtransmission, wind collection runs |
| Bare copper | Grounding grids and counterpoise |
Power plants and plant electrical rooms
Plant work is outage-driven. A spring or fall outage is planned to the hour, cable is staged in advance, and when a scope item is dropped the staged reel goes back to the warehouse. Across several outages a plant builds a shelf of cable bought for work that was deferred rather than cancelled.
Control and instrumentation cable accumulates the same way. A control system migration replaces signal cable inside cabinets, and the spare ordered for terminations stays sealed in its carton.
Tags, access and loading a heavy reel
The tag does most of the work here. A medium-voltage reel carries the manufacturer, part number, conductor size, insulation type, voltage class and original footage. Photograph the tag flat and in daylight, then photograph the jacket print as a second check. If a factory test report came with the reel, keep it with the reel.
These reels are heavy and none of them move by hand. A flatbed with a forklift at each end is the usual arrangement. A boom truck is needed when the reel sits deep in a yard or behind other stock, which is common at a substation or a laydown lot.
The offer is wire and cable only. We do not buy transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators or chillers, and the equipment a cable connects to is not part of the quote. Wire on the reel is the whole of it. Start with the quote form once the photographs are in hand.
- Reel tag with part number, footage and voltage class
- Jacket legend photograph as a second identification
- Insulation type: EPR, XLPE, concentric neutral
- Whether the reel is full, partial or cut
- Access: forklift on site, boom truck needed, or clear ground
Photograph the tag, the jacket print and the reel where it stands. Note the footage, the class and what equipment can reach it. That is what a medium-voltage quote is built from, and pickup follows once you accept.

QUESTIONS FROM THIS SIDE OF THE LOAD
Do you buy partially used medium-voltage reels?
Yes. A 15 kV reel with 600 feet left is quoted on remaining footage, conductor size and insulation type. Medium-voltage cable is worth identifying precisely because the same footage prices differently across classes. Photograph the tag and the jacket print, and say whether the cut end was sealed.
Can cable that sat in a yard for years still be sold?
Often, yes. Sun and weather attack the outer wrap before they reach the insulation, so a reel with intact jacket and a dry drum is usually sound. Cable stored standing in water or with a crushed wrap needs a closer look. Photograph the damage rather than describing it.
Who moves the reel if it is behind other stock?
The site does, or the pickup is planned around it. Clearing a path to the loading point is part of preparing a lot, and it goes faster with the site's own forklift than with anything improvised at the truck. Say what sits in front of the reel and how much room there is to turn.

TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE
Send the details and photos of the reels. A tag photo and a jacket photo answer most of our questions, so you do not have to measure anything twice.
- Wire and cable only: no transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators or machinery.
- Full reels, partial reels, spools, coils and boxed stock all welcome.
- Statewide Kansas pickup arranged after we agree on the load.
